Just right before we went home, my banker hiao hiao bought Wii (after I mentioned I'm interested in the Wii Sports) and we took it home to play with the rest of the family members.
So, apart from mahjong and cards (most of the time it's mahjong), we have Wii games to be entertained. Almost everyone had a go at one of those sports, even the koong koong. It was so cute to see grandpa and grandson horse racing each other to the finishing line.
Below is a video of my sil whacking her hubby out. Excuse the evil laughter at the background (that's not me, definitely!)
CNY truly live up to its standard of a blardy hot festive season here. It was so hot that by the third venue, didi came down with a slight fever and became inactive for the rest of the day. The idea to celebrate his birthday together with his grandpa in the routine annual "open house" at the gas station was dropped. I sat together with him at the office, just mother hugging son, rocking him a lullabye and singing happy birthday song to him. A tender moment to be remembered indeed.
Our annual friends' meet was interrupted this year by the absence of a few, especially the one who hosts our party each year. But it was good that 2 of them took the initiative to sms me up to ask any plans. Why, I am just a follower all the time, but these guys always think I'm the leader to arrange these things all the freaking time. We eventually met up outside in a crowded Old Town kopitiam, but the 2 hours spent chatting and talking nonsense was great. I "wat" this friend to invite us to his house for a BBQ party on the 14th Feb in KL.. ha ha.. poor thing!
A birthday party to attend in Kampar today, another friends' gathering at Casuarina, some lou-sang sessions to go and off we go back to KL. I miss my home sweet home, honestly speaking.

CNY traffic news
One of the favorite topic during CNY gatherings is how long our journey balik kampung takes. Funny why but it does seem like we would be half complaining and half basking in the glory of being the winner who took the most absurd longest journey home compared to the usual.
I myself had experienced a slow crawl almost all the way from KL to Ipoh, something like 10-40km/hour most of the time. It was really damn frustrating on the road, what with you were paying toll to use the highway some more!
But we learned from our mistakes and PLUS highway made some expansions to some stretches as well. Patrick from Spore once chose to drove in the midnight to avoid the crowd and we had made careful considerations too when to embark on the journey home like consulting the bomoh
This year, my banker calculated accurately, using the thumb to count his other fingers, that it would be the best timing of all.. Friday, 22nd after 1pm.
So, there we were, plan all lined up. Kids came home, pom pom, I take a nap while they linger around, told banker to ta-pau lunch home (as hell, no! I'm not going to cook and wash anymore), and only started packing after all that's done. Meanwhile, have to check the fridge, no easy perishable items, ah.. still got half the watermelon in that. Well, what to do, make watermelon juice.
Then have to ensure the dirty laundry washed and hang, son's homework is cleared, all items needed for CNY packed and ... gosh! so much work to do geh?
By the time we, or rather, I was done, I was half dead and the luggage seem to tell any passerby that we are moving house. It's such a big mission to go home for CNY, man.
And we were on the road at 5.30pm finally. Dang! It was the first time the Q at Jalan Duta toll plaza stretches that long. I tried to influence banker to U-turn and go home another day, but he was adamant. It was lucky it didn't turn out to be so bad on the highway. We finally made it home at about 8.30pm. Very hungry and quickly gobbled up the dinner prepared by my mil. Now, time to hit the sack.
Happy Ox Year, everyone!

Explaining analog camera.
One of the things I would like to see myself do more this year is spend more time to tutor the kids, especially korkor. The first 2 years, I had thought it could be a good idea for him to learn how to "swim" by himself. Now that the syllables are getting tougher, if I don't provide some "floats", he might "sink and drown". Compared to many kids I know, they are already in tuition classes one after another since Year 1, while mine was still enjoying the privilege of watching TV, playing computer games and idling the time away.
Last week, I tried to develop a routine for weekdays to do some study after dinner. On Friday, he really made me lose my cool by complaining about it. Really vomit blood. I scolded at him and set a rule once and for all,
1. School day, evenings, study! No computer games, no TV.
2. Exceptions only on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
3. Want to complain and object? Fine, no more vacations, he can very well go and stay with grandparents while didi and meimei tag with us during school holidays.
And he? *sulks even more*.
But, I shall give him credit when credit is due. Today, he indeed made me proud by obediently getting some study done after dinner was over. Hence, busy checking his kamus-dictionary.
After which, I sat down with him going through the paragraph and it was indeed very satisfying to see him enlightened and "learned". The story touched on digital camera briefly and he asked me the kind of camera we used last time. I then went on to tell him how we used to take and develop pictures before, starting from the film to the processing. It feels good to see him in awe and interested in my story/facts telling.

My, for a slight moment, I felt peculiar too, how different last time taking photos were, compared to this new digital era. And it seemed not too long ago too, we were still using the films when he was born. I showed him the even older photographs which were in black and white, and it seemed like his first time to see that's his maternal grandma when she was young.
Hope we have the discipline to keep this routine going.

What a movie!
This afternoon I watched a movie called "Cape no. 7". It's in Chinese mostly, sprinkled with a Taiwanese dialect and Japanese lines here and there. Now, I can't even understand Chinese, what with the stupid dialect and Japanese language, what was I doing watching it? Can't rely on the subtitles as it is even more complicated to understand than the dialogues.
But somehow, I laughed at some parts of the show, slept through midway of it, cried at the ending and loved the song at the last part of the show. Though, I STILL did not know what the whole damn show was about. This is indeed the first time in history I watched a movie and then only googled it to read what it's all about .. (ohhhh.. sodeska, now I know!)
Have you heard or watched it before? If not, maybe you should! Try doing it the same way like I did. And the song at the end, you'll love it. I did, it was really beautiful.

Extra curricular activities in school
Now that the korkor is in Pri 3, it's time to let him stay back in school for some extra-curricular activities, like kaului which is also compulsory from his school.
I'm not a very democratic mom, I do admit, though initially I tried to be supportive in letting him choose what he likes to join. This, when it wasn't the one I had in mind for him, is very boring la, I would tell him. Then I would "suggest" that he joins the boy scouts and badminton, adding why that these are good and fun. And he agreed without any hesitation. *grin*
Thus, this week, started a new routine where he would only come home few hours late, apparently like a busier person than I am. I was very worried initially because he seemed to be blurr on the activities he joined, as when I asked him last Friday about the details, he just shrugged his shoulders, looked at me with a blank face and a comment "DUNNO!".
I told myself to just let him find his way out, to learn to be more independent. At last, I couldn't handle the stress anymore and venture out to school to peep on him. Boy! It was really heart-thumping trying to look for him, and lucky for me, I managed to know-it-all from his class teacher.
Since I was there, might as well settle the outstanding amount my son owed and the things which are needed from him. It was quite a headache when the books are incomplete, plus all the other 101 items he has to have. And though I had wanted to let him settle the things himself like a big man, I had, in the end, secretly lent him a helping hand.
When he came back from the badminton session that very day, I would ask him how's the day, as usual, and it was a delight when he beamed with joy telling me, it was 99% good! It's still funny to me how he uses percentage to answer my questions like these, though it was very precise indeed, as I need not ask him further how's bad is bad or how's good is good.
His papa finds it weird why kids ever needed badminton lessons to learn to play badminton. As in our generation, it seems to come so naturally, no? I myself feel it's good to learn the basics of holding a racquet the correct way, playing his game in his court the right way, instead of picking up all the wrong techniques on our own.
Though somehow, I would agree there are people who just pick up sports ever so naturally, like my 2nd brother, never ever needed any coaches. Just look at how my hubby runs around in the court when he plays is enough to tell me badminton lessons is the way to go. *whisper* I don't mind if he becomes a national badminton player and go all the way to Olympics in a few years' time too.
And it feels so good to be sleeping way till 7am before the alarm rings, and back in just a jiff, unlike previously. Last week, I had woke up together with him at 6.15 am to get prepared and sent him down to the lady driver before 6.50am, and after 3 days, I had enough. The traffic is very smooth during the morning time as well. I am so loving the days now, with the mornings just free and easy.
Finally the new routine is starting to set in. Time to take the mahjong table out and call people!

Days with the kids alone.
It's confinement days all over again. Though I could have go out and bring them kaikai all by myself, I prefer not to as I would be stressing out. Not worth it to la-see-seong-san, right?
Lucky thing I'm not too much a party person, I can tahan staying at home all day. With internet, the new TV and home theatre, it's not too unbearable. But staying at home all day on a Saturday is rather uncommon for us indeed. Usually it's a family day, with breakfast and dinner outside.
I spent the time watching TGOL back to back, while sprawling on the floor with the kids, coloring the building blocks, drawing smileys and creating new tones with the few basic colors. And before I knew it, half of the day was gone. Tucked them to bed early and finally it's some "me" time where I get to enjoy a good movie in the warm cosy atmosphere. My friend and I watched together "Awake" which really kept us awake indeed. And I dragged on even further my TVB craze till 1.30am. What a waste of time indeed!
The next day we had to go out already. Sure would, since I have their "lai-ma" with me. (hehe.. JM, you are the lai-ma, happy anot? not the maid laa, at least). And we went to Ikea, met the Goolymama and her little dinosaur, had lunch and brought some CNY clothes together in the Curve. That's what happen when 3 women who absolutely lurveess to dress up nicely and pan-leng-leng to keep their stock price still high in the market. (Ya, self denial)
It's not too bad spending time with the kids alone.

New school, new friends, new badge.
The days are back again, but with slight modification.
Korkor is now in a new school with a new badge on a new shirt, otherwise, everything else he took with him are still old ones. Time to make new boyfriends and girlfriends, polish new teachers' shoes and make new contracts with the black societies again. I guess he's taking it coolly, while I am the one running about worrying over every little details for him. Sweats.
This time round, the school is much closer to home. On the first day, both papa and mommy accompanied him, like he just started schooling. Well, not meant to show overly concern, but since it's new for him, just can't bear to dump him off and let him ji-san-ji-meat, right? We didn't even know which class he's to go to, as the PIC told me during the school holidays to come and ask only on today.
So, off we went to seek for his class after meeting his class teacher, who has the same surname as him (I hope this factor alone can pull some strings a bit), and then took him to the book shop to get the books this school uses. Both dad and son are so happy to find a lift and happily go in, only to get an irresponsive lift. Sure la, where so good, students can take lift woh! Meant only for teachers, I'm sure. Malunya..
We hang around for a little while longer. Papa bets the food in the canteen is very cheap and fill stomach first, don't care. OK la, many parents hanging around too, so we weren't the only one, we were just there for the cheap breakfast (suen-pin) only.
Then came back home to settle the other two. We still haven't decide which kindy to send them to, between
(1) the previous one where everything is neat and tidy, warm and cosy, used to the teachers and friends, but slightly far off..
or
(2) another kindy much nearer, but not so neat and tidy, not so warm and cosy and everything else we are unfamiliar with.
I took them to the 2nd one first to look see look see. They were just having an assembly while the kancheong parents stood at the doorway to observe them. All of the children are without shoes and I was waiting for them to go back to their classroom to see if any changes were done compared to the last time I was there for the inquiry during the school holidays.
After what seemed like an eternity, songs after songs they sang together, they finally disperse and I sneaked up to have a look. The kids shoes were placed outside the classroom, which only meant that they walked into the house with their shoes on and placed it there when they reach the class, right? And I remember seeing these kids without their shoes during assembly. Does it give a rather unpleasant feeling?
Then the rooms just look ngap ngap tap tap, like quite rundown. That's it! I took their little hands and just walked away, back to the previous school. They are so darn happy!
It's almost time to go home when we reach there, as the first 2 days are shorter. So I just hang around and chat with the principal, hoping that she will give me some discounts for the school fees, on what grounds, I don't know. But sigh, to no avail it was. But as long as the kids are happy and the environment is good enough, just close an eye la.
It was about time to go back to korkor's school very soon too, and boy! the traffic there is real pening kepala. I inquired about some school vans, bas sekolah or carpooling with parents. Eventually, I decided it's time to leave some space for him to learn about independence. (Actually, I am really tired of being a driver, and the traffic there is really hopeless)
Carefully selecting the choices available, we decided on a lady who uses her own personal car to transport few other students in the same school. I asked her to give her some information about herself, and she was shocked. She said it's the first time she heard of such request! Am I just being paranoid? But I was only asking where she stays, I haven't even open my mouth to ask her for a photocopy of her IC, passport, BC and a form to fill in yet.
I wonder if I'm just being abnormal or other parents who are too nonchalant about these details. Don't they want to know what sort of a person he/she is who's driving their kids to and fro from school? I really do not know. Anyway, I did apologize profusely about my too-concern attitude and kept reasoning and begging for her understanding in this. But I really do not feel I am asking too much, after all, she knows where I am staying too, right?
At the end of the day, after settling down and looking over the past 2 days, I do feel like I'm more kancheong than my son on all these new arrangements. Sort of not used to it in the beginning. But it does give me lots of free time in the morning now, and there seemed to be so much I'm looking forward to do in this year.

First post for 2009, the beginning.
The new year began with some clickety clack of mahjong tiles, hands busily "swimming" and exercising.. It was a 3-kaki affair, and both women lost over 20 bucks each to the only male there. But the joy is of course, not in losing or winning, but in the process of plotting and trying to win the opponent's tiles. Such were the gracefulness of both ladies. :D
For some trivial matters, hubby and I striked on a bad chord to began our year, and thus, didn't end up making love on bed, while I shutdown my system, unaccessible until the smoke diminish. And almost there after msn-ing my 2 best buddies today. Sigh! This is how things work, over and over again. Whatever will happen if best girlfriends are not around to provide a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, dissing the villains together, dousing the fire, is beyond imagination. For the men, you really got to thank their best girlfriends!
Apart from that unnecessary distraction, everything else is looking quite good. We went to shop around, hunting for some good bargains, as almost everywhere and everyone were saying "Keep your cash, 2009 will be tough!". It's been a long while we had been ogling at some home theater system and a big plasma TV BUT... finally we made the purchase to welcome it in into our home. Watching late night movies at home won't be the same anymore. I am so looking forward to it. Yeah, I know, most of you might already have that long long time ago, what's the big deal, huh? But new toilets do smell nice in the beginning, don't they?
I do have a few resolutions in my head to work on this year though. And one of them is to work on more charitable work. Anyone with me?
